Notes from JLF : Usha Chhabra

For the sixth year in a row, we partnered with the Zee Jaipur Literature Festival and Teamwork Arts to manage to outreach component of the festival. In its sixth year, the Outreach from January 16-25th, 2017 was hosted in 100 schools in and around Jaipur. Here are some stories from the people who added all the magic to the events :

Usha Chaabra says...
Stories have power. They delight, enchant, touch, teach, recall, inspire, motivate, challenge. They help us understand. They imprint a picture on our minds. Want to make a point or raise an issue? Tell a story.— Janet Litherland
I could really sense the power of stories, A wonderful experience where kids as well as teachers enjoyed the stories. Stories and folk tales of different countries were shared through enactment as well as using props.Children were also involved through role play in some of the stories. It was heartening to see each person smiling at the end of the session and children asking for more stories.

I took six sessions in-
Govt. Girls Sec. School, Govind Nagar
Govt. Sr. Sec. School Harmada
Govt. UPS Murli Manohar , Ramganj Chaupar
Govt. UPS Maharaja Adarsh
Govt. Sec. school Baasbadanpura
Govt. PS Van Vihar

I sincerely appreciate the effort and congratulate Pratham Books for having reached the target of covering 100 schools.

Little Bookworms at Akshay School

Last year, our 29 states, 29 libraries campaign enabled us to send library kits across the country. Akshay School in Amwan village was one such school which was chosen to receive this library. When the books arrived, Raquel Mason (the Director of the school) wrote to us to say :
The children are thrilled and enjoying every single book!
Although summer vacation started there is a group of children who are coming to school daily for tuition and at the same time they are enjoying some time in the library. We still have to arrange some more furniture to settle every book in a nice way but I wanted to send you these photos so you can see how the books are already making the children's imagination wonder.

Today, Raquel sent us another update about the library along with a lovely video that made our day!
Since we received last May your books for our school, we prepared a room with a lot of natural light and with mats where children can find a place full of peace to be able to enjoy reading.
We have adjusted to the weekly school routine 2 periods of library for each class, so they come to read, enjoy and love books. They can also use the library during holidays if they wish and small workshops related to reading are conducted during summer holidays.
Children read the books depending of their level and the teacher is also present to aid the students.
They all are always excited and looking forward to library period as at home they don’t have any books to read. They like learning new stories which later they share with their friends and brothers or sisters.
Children have favourite books which they like to read more than once, and they practice their reading skills at the same time they enjoy.
All students of our school visit the library every week and learn also to take care of the books.
Our school is located in a rural village where there is no library at all. This is why it is so important for the children to have this space and possibility of reading books and coming to know how enjoyable it can be reading.
Thank you very much for your beautiful books!

A huge thank to all the donors who supported the campaign. Thank you for putting the joy of reading into the hands of the little bookworms at Akshay school!

We are now looking for an experienced Product Manager that can lead our digital projects as we significantly scale these initiatives. (Update : This position has been filled and the posting is closed.)

About the Digital Properties

Pratham Books has two digital platforms - StoryWeaver and Donate-a-Book

Storyweaver is a digital platform that hosts stories in languages from India and beyond, so that every child can have an endless stream of stories in her mother tongue to read and enjoy. The stories can be read, translated, versioned or downloaded for free. All stories on the platform are openly licensed and the goal is to open source the code as well. In just one year, StoryWeaver has scaled from 800 stories in 24 languages to 2800 stories in 59 languages by engaging with a community of users. We want every child to have access to quality reading resources in their own language.

StoryWeaver is being recognized as an emerging innovation that can transform the early literacy reader ecosystem globally. Our vision is for StoryWeaver to be the largest multilingual open library in the world for children by empowering communities to address the scarcity of reading resources in their mother tongue languages and scale the quantity and quality of content being produced.
