Conferences, Contests and Workshops

1. Jalebi Ink's Journalism Workshop for Young People

Via Jalebi Ink (via Chintan Girish Modi)
Jalebi Ink presents Create Your Own Newspaper, a special workshop on journalism for youngsters. Young people are affected by most of the top stories today—from terrorism to urban planning to environmental disasters. But too often their perspective is missing. Jalebi Ink’s workshops give young people the opportunity to bridge this gap and learn ‘on the job’ through its ‘Create your Own Newspaper’ Workshop.
Over the course of two weeks, participants research and write stories on issues that are important to them. The workshop modules help young people develop their ability to work in teams, manage their time, conduct independent enquiries, communicate effectively and think critically. At the end of the workshop, participants will have created a complete news package that will enable them to connect to a real audience about the stories which are important to them.
The workshop will begin with a prep session that will take participants through the basics of reporting – news gathering, writing, editing, use of images in news and so on. The next seven days will be given over to assignments and writing stories. The workshop ends with a final wrap-up session over the next weekend.
The Prep session will be held on 24th and 25th July, 2010. Find more details about the workshop here.

2. Wild Child Anthology : Call for Submissions

Via Writer's Notebook
Open for submissions July 1-October 1, 2010

Children and teens to age 17

Vanilla Heart Publishing, through the VHP imprint, Evergreen Books, is issuing a call for nature writing by and for children and teens. The works may address any aspect of nature from a tiny meadow flower to a towering mountaintop and all the creatures that inhabit the wild places in our world. From seashore to sandy desert, from a cool green forest to the shimmering light through towering forest trees, our world is filled with wild places and delights that children often see with a clear eye and open heart, and those are the very things we want to publish.

We'll be publishing Wild Child in both print and electronic formats. A portion of the profits from both this anthology and Be A Wild Child! Junior Earth Mage Activity Book, to be published later this year, will be donated to the non-profit National Forest Association, a national organization supporting education, enjoyment, and renewal of wild lands and nature's bounty.

Poems should be 50 lines or fewer and prose 150-5000 words.
