World Book Fair 2010

Manisha Chaudhry, Head of content development- Pratham Books, shares the enthusiasm and energy prevalent at the World Book Fair being held in Delhi. If you haven't visited the fair yet, don't worry - it is on till 7th February, 2010.

On a sunny winter morning, row upon row of orderly children filed in to Pavillion 7 of the World Book Fair. The grey carpet is livened up by the light spotting the colours of over 700 books on sport in the adjoining area. Manas Ranjan Mahapatra of NBT asked the children why they liked to read and sure enough the first answers were as grey as the carpet:Because they teach us good things...because they give us knowledge...As the teachers nodded approvingly, he broke into an impromptu Mauja hi Mauja! And it was fine to enjoy books for just Mauja hi Mauja.
Kuldeep Sandhu of Pratham then read out from Raja Nang Dhadanga and the children rode the crest of the wave of laughter as the sartorially challenged emperor stepped out in his birthday suit.

More and more children kept arriving until there was barely any room to sit.

The puppet making activity had to be switched to a drawing activity in groups. Piles of Pratham Books' titles dwindled as they were handed out to eager children who efficiently got down to the business of drawing and writing a line or two of description. Colours were exchanged, charts held down, plaintive cries as time ran out and before you knew it there was a precious bundle of enjoyment in our hands. The NBT Director gave out some more of our books to celebrate the enthusiasm of the children.

Cake, juice and biscuits after the rigours of the morning made our happiness complete.
